In an era where reality seems ever more malleable, the specter of deepfakes looms large, prompting governments worldwide to grapple with a potent threat to democracy. India, with its burgeoning online population and frequent elections, stands at the forefront of this battle, seeking to fortify its democratic foundations against the insidious influence of manipulated content.

The Indian government, led by IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishaw, has sounded the alarm, labeling deepfakes as “a threat to democracy.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed these concerns, highlighting the urgency of addressing this perilous phenomenon.

What exactly are deepfakes? They are ingeniously crafted artificial intelligence-generated content that convincingly alters appearances, voices, or actions, blurring the line between reality and fabrication. These sophisticated manipulations pose a formidable challenge: discerning genuine content from their deceptively crafted counterparts.

The proposed regulations aim to tackle this menace head-on. They encompass a multifaceted approach involving measures such as watermarking, detection tools, addressing biases, and implementing privacy safeguards. Social media platforms and stakeholders are aligning with the government’s apprehensions, pledging robust technology for deepfake detection.

The urgency of the matter is reflected in the government’s swift timeline. Within a span of 10 days, they intend to draft regulations emphasizing detection, prevention, reporting, and awareness. Discussions scheduled in early December will further focus on curbing harmful content and ensuring accountability for both creators and platforms.

The scale of India’s internet user base, set to surge from 80 crore to an estimated 120 crore in just two years, intensifies the gravity of the situation. With deepfake technology rapidly evolving, its potential to influence opinions and disrupt the democratic process cannot be understated.

Consider the implications in India’s perpetual cycle of elections. Political parties engage in an incessant battle for influence, and the emergence of deepfake narratives threatens to disrupt the very fabric of fair electoral processes. Manipulative deepfakes could be wielded as a tool to sway voting patterns, injecting complexity and doubt into the political landscape.

Moreover, the danger extends beyond elections. Deepfakes pose a grave risk to journalistic integrity, casting doubt on genuine investigations into abuses of power and corruption. Audio or video evidence presented by journalists can be maliciously labeled as deepfakes, eroding trust in the truth and exacerbating societal divisions.

The looming threat of deepfakes necessitates a robust regulatory framework within India’s Digital India law. Safeguarding democracy demands proactive measures to combat the potential manipulation of elections, the widening of social rifts, and the erosion of trust in essential institutions.

In conclusion, the advent of deepfakes represents a pivotal moment for India and democracies worldwide. Mitigating this threat requires a concerted effort involving government interventions, technological innovations, and a collective societal commitment to upholding the sanctity of truth and democracy in the digital age. Failure to act decisively could plunge the democratic ethos into an abyss of uncertainty and manipulation.

The realm of 3D printing is undergoing a transformative leap with researchers from ETH Zurich and US start-up Inkbit unveiling a groundbreaking technology that extends beyond fast-curing plastics, now embracing slow-curing polymers. This innovation marks a pivotal moment in the 3D printing landscape, allowing the creation of intricate, more durable robots with enhanced elastic properties.

Traditionally, 3D printing was confined to fast-curing plastics, limiting the scope of materials and properties that could be harnessed. The newly developed technology by ETH Zurich and Inkbit shatters these constraints, enabling the incorporation of slow-curing thiolene polymers. These polymers offer superior elastic properties, rapidly returning to their original state after bending, making them ideal for crafting flexible ligaments in robotic structures.

A notable achievement of this technology is the creation of a robotic hand with bones, ligaments, and tendons made from diverse polymers in a single printing process. Thomas Buchner, a doctoral student in the group of ETH Zurich’s robotics professor Robert Katzschmann, highlights the significance: “We’re now using slow-curing thiolene polymers. These have very good elastic properties and return to their original state much faster after bending than polyacrylates.”

Soft robots, such as the intricately printed robotic hand, offer advantages over their metal counterparts. Their pliability reduces the risk of injury when working with humans, and they prove more adept at handling delicate items. The ability to combine soft, elastic, and rigid materials seamlessly opens doors to versatile applications in robotics.

The 3D printing process has been redefined to accommodate slow-curing polymers. A 3D laser scanner checks each layer for surface irregularities, providing real-time feedback to adjust material deposition accurately. Unlike previous methods that involved scraping off irregularities, this technology adapts to uneven layers by incorporating them into subsequent layers.

MIT spin-off Inkbit played a pivotal role in developing this cutting-edge printing technology. ETH Zurich researchers collaborated on optimizing the technology for slow-curing polymers, resulting in a joint publication in the journal Nature.

Professor Wojciech Matusik of MIT emphasizes the significance of the feedback mechanism: “A feedback mechanism compensates for these irregularities when printing the next layer by calculating any necessary adjustments to the amount of material to be printed in real time and with pinpoint accuracy.”

Moving forward, ETH Zurich’s robotics group plans to explore additional possibilities using the technology, delving into more sophisticated structures and applications. Meanwhile, Inkbit aims to leverage this breakthrough for a 3D printing service and the commercial sale of advanced printers. The fusion of Swiss and US expertise marks a monumental step towards reshaping the capabilities of 3D printing technology and its potential impact across various industries.

In a bid to resolve a sugar-related dispute at the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Brazil has extended an olive branch to India by proposing to share its advanced ethanol production technology. The South American nation suggests that this technology could assist India in utilizing its surplus sugar for ethanol production, potentially easing competition in the global sugar market.

Brazil, renowned as the world’s leading producer of sugarcane, ethanol, and the largest global exporter of sugar, holds cutting-edge technology for ethanol production. India, the second-largest sugar producer globally, could benefit from Brazil’s expertise as it seeks to increase the percentage of ethanol blending in auto fuels, gradually reducing reliance on imported crude oil.

The proposed technology, known for its flexibility, allows for ethanol blending, offering India a solution to address its fuel-related challenges. Brazil contends that India could utilize surplus sugar for ethanol production, preventing excess sugar from affecting global markets and impacting world prices.

Discussions are underway regarding Brazil’s proposal, which aligns with India’s goal of achieving 20% ethanol blending with petrol by 2025. Ethanol, derived from sugarcane and other agricultural produce, aids in reducing carbon emissions and lessens dependence on foreign oil, crucial for India, which imports 85% of its oil needs.

The WTO dispute originated in 2019 when Brazil, Australia, and Guatemala alleged that India’s support measures, including Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane farmers, violated global trade rules. A WTO dispute settlement panel ruled against India in December 2021, leading to an appeal by India in January 2022. However, the appellate body’s dysfunction, arising from disputes over member appointments, hampers the resolution process.

While the trade gap remains in favor of India, bilateral trade between India and Brazil surged to USD 16.6 billion in 2022-23, compared to USD 12.2 billion in the previous fiscal year. Reports indicate that Brazil has achieved a notable 25% blending level in ethanol-blended gasoline, positioning it as a leader in the field.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has secured the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) license for the upcoming test flight of its groundbreaking Starship and heavy-lift rocket in Texas. The launch is scheduled for Friday, with a two-hour window opening at 7 am Central Time. SpaceX cautioned locals about potential loud noises during the rocket’s ascent.

Starship, deemed the most powerful rocket ever built, is designed for transporting up to 100 people to Mars. The announcement of approvals for the launch came from Walter Isaacson, author of Elon Musk’s biography, revealing a liftoff schedule at 8 am ET from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in South Texas.

This marks SpaceX’s second attempt, following the April test that ended in a mid-air explosion four minutes post-liftoff. Despite a successful takeoff, multiple engine failures during ascent and a failure to separate as planned led to the intentional destruction of the rocket. The incident prompted environmental concerns and disbelief from the US Fish and Wildlife Service due to the extent of the damage.

To greenlight the new launch license, the FAA conducted a rigorous review of SpaceX’s site upgrades, with a particular focus on the water deluge system. Environmental groups had previously sued the FAA in May, alleging hasty approval of SpaceX’s Starbase launch facility.

Starship’s significance lies in its status as the largest and most powerful rocket ever developed, crucial to Musk’s aspirations of enabling space travel to destinations like the moon and Mars. Following a mishap investigation, the FAA closed the case in September, recommending 63 corrective actions for SpaceX to prevent similar incidents in future Starship launches.
