IMD Forecasts Cyclonic Storm Over Bay of Bengal by December 2

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding the formation of a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal around December 2. This prediction stems from a well-marked low-pressure area currently situated in the southeast Bay of Bengal, anticipated to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours. Furthermore, the bulletin suggests the gradual escalation of this depression into a cyclonic storm by December 2.

In light of this forecast, an orange alert has been declared for various regions in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram, for December 2 and 3. This alert advises caution and preparedness among residents due to the anticipated heavy rainfall and potential impacts of the developing cyclonic system.

Fisherfolks have been cautioned against venturing into the southeast Bay of Bengal from November 30 to December 3, emphasizing safety measures as the storm progresses. It’s recommended that those currently at sea return promptly to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands or the coast by Thursday to avoid the potential risks associated with the impending cyclone.

The weather department’s advisory highlights the likelihood of heavy rainfall across several regions. Puducherry is expected to experience heavy rains from Thursday to December 4, while Kerala and Mahe might encounter heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday. Additionally, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are forecasted to experience heavy rainfall from Saturday to December 4. Moreover, Central Maharashtra and Marathwada might witness light isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and hailstorms.

Tamil Nadu has already encountered substantial rainfall, resulting in various challenges such as waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and instances of fallen trees in multiple areas. Efforts by the Greater Chennai Corporation have been made to clear most subways for traffic, with only the Rangarapuram 2-wheeler subway pending clearance as of Thursday morning.

Responding to the situation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has instructed ministers, legislators, and local body representatives to extend necessary support to affected residents. Additionally, schools in Chennai and nearby districts have been declared closed, ensuring safety amid the ongoing weather conditions.

As the IMD’s warnings persist and regions brace for the forthcoming cyclonic storm, authorities and residents remain vigilant, prioritizing safety measures and preparedness in anticipation of the impending weather adversities.
