Focus back on India-UK free trade agreement

The diplomatic corridors between India and the United Kingdom are bustling with anticipation as both nations converge on a pivotal point in their relationship. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underscored the paramount significance of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in defining the trajectory of this bilateral alliance. He expressed optimism, emphasizing the quest for a mutually beneficial “landing point” in the ongoing negotiations.

The talks have gained substantial momentum, with discussions revolving around an Enhanced Trade Partnership, colloquially referred to as an FTA. Jaishankar’s recent meeting with the newly appointed UK counterpart, David Cameron, highlighted the shared commitment to not only the proposed FTA but also collaborative strides in defense, science, and technology.

Speaking at a Diwali Reception in London hosted by the High Commission of India, Jaishankar lauded the bilateral relationship as a positive force globally. He urged the expansive Indian diaspora, a significant segment residing in the UK, to champion the narrative of India’s evolution and progress.

The foundation for this multifaceted partnership was laid in 2021 with the launch of the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, complemented by the ambitious India-UK Roadmap 2030. The intent was to expand and fortify ties across diverse sectors.

Initiating negotiations for a free trade agreement in January 2022 marked a significant milestone in this trajectory. The aim was to substantially augment the existing GBP 36-billion bilateral trading partnership. Thirteen rounds of negotiations have ensued, fostering a climate of hope and optimism about sealing the deal before the general elections in both nations slated for 2024.

Amidst these promising developments, India has actively sought evidence from the UK regarding suspects involved in the regrettable violence at the Indian High Commission in London during a pro-Khalistan protest on March 19. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made a request under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, signifying India’s commitment to upholding justice while fostering international collaborations.

The convergence of economic aspirations, strategic interests, and shared values underscores the significance of an India-UK Free Trade Agreement. As negotiations reach a critical juncture, the potential of this alliance to shape global trade dynamics and foster deeper bilateral cooperation remains ripe with promise.
