Afghanistan Embassy in New Delhi Permanently Closes Amid Strained Relations

The Afghanistan Embassy in New Delhi has made a solemn announcement of its permanent closure, citing ongoing challenges posed by the Indian government. This decision, effective from November 23, 2023, comes after the embassy ceased operations temporarily on September 30, hoping for a change in India’s stance to allow for normal functioning.

While some interpretations suggest internal diplomatic conflicts aligning with the Taliban, the embassy clarified that broader policy changes and interests led to this closure. Expressing gratitude to Afghan citizens in India for their understanding, the embassy highlighted its efforts to serve the Afghan community despite limited resources, bridging the gap caused by the absence of a legitimate government in Kabul.

The statement underscored a significant decline in the Afghan community in India over the past two years, attributing it to the departure of refugees, students, and traders. Despite challenges, the embassy affirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and fair treatment, emphasizing the goodwill and bilateral relations between Afghanistan and India.

Presently, there are no diplomats from the Afghan Republic in India, as those who served have safely reached third countries. The fate of the mission now lies in the hands of the Indian government, which can choose to maintain its closure or explore alternative solutions, including engaging with Taliban diplomats.

Expressing gratitude to the people of India for their support over the past 22 years, the embassy reiterated its dedication to finding ways to support Afghanistan amid challenging times. The closure, initially announced on November 1, was attributed to resource constraints and the failure of the Taliban regime to uphold Afghanistan’s interests.

However, the embassy criticized certain consulates operating under instructions and funding from Kabul, considering them aligned with an illegitimate regime rather than a legitimate or elected government.

The closure of the Afghanistan Embassy in New Delhi stands as a poignant development in the diplomatic landscape, reflecting strained relations and policy dynamics between the two nations. As Afghanistan navigates through tumultuous transitions, the closure signifies a poignant chapter in the bilateral relationship, urging both nations to reassess their diplomatic strategies and interests for the future.
