In a thrilling semifinal at the Vienna Open, Daniil Medvedev emerged victorious, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas and securing his place in the tournament final. The match was closely contested, with just one break of serve throughout. However, it was the Russian, Medvedev, who ultimately prevailed, winning 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in the Austrian capital.
Medvedev, who had previously battled past Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals, now remains on track to defend his title at the Vienna Open, a title he secured last year. Tsitsipas, who had triumphed over Borna Gojo in the quarter-finals, was left to rue some missed early opportunities in this intense showdown.
The match saw Tsitsipas serving first and missing two crucial break point opportunities in the fourth game of the opening set, which could have given him a 3-1 lead. Medvedev capitalized on the situation, securing a 4-3 lead, and ultimately clinching the first set 6-4.
The second set continued to be an evenly matched contest, with serve holding steady until a tie-break was reached. In the tie-break, Medvedev managed to edge past Tsitsipas, winning it 8-6 when Tsitsipas committed an unforced error by hitting a forehand wide. This victory marked Medvedev’s 64th win of the year, a career-best for the Russian.
After the match, Medvedev expressed his satisfaction with his performance, particularly his strong serving. He stated, “I served well throughout the whole match. In general, I am happy with how I served and put pressure on him on a lot of points. I had a lot of opportunities, and he played well on them also. Generally, this pressure paid off at the end of the match.”
In the final, Medvedev will face Jannik Sinner as he aims to secure his third ATP 500 title of the year. He acknowledged the strength of both Sinner and Andrey Rublev, his previous opponents, saying, “I have played both of them in finals. Jannik already three times and Andrey once. They have had amazing years. Jannik is finishing really strong, so it will be interesting to see how the match goes.”
Sinner Triumphs Over Rublev to Reach Final
In the other Vienna Open semifinal, Jannik Sinner claimed victory over Andrey Rublev, booking his spot in the final. The world No. 4 secured a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) triumph after an intense battle against the Russian.
The first set saw Rublev breaking Sinner’s serve, giving him a 4-2 lead. However, Sinner made a comeback, breaking back to narrow the gap to 5-4. Sinner gained the lead for the first time at 6-5 and managed to secure the first set after a successful hold of serve at 7-5.
The second set remained closely contested, with neither player having break point opportunities. The score was level at 4-4 until Sinner finally managed to break Rublev’s serve. However, Rublev quickly responded, breaking back and leveling the score at 5-5.
The set concluded with a tie-break, in which Sinner secured the victory, booking a final meeting with Daniil Medvedev after claiming his first match point.
