Delhi Archer Draws Inspiration from Mythological Heroes

Abhishek Verma, an archer hailing from Delhi, deeply influenced by the mythical tales of Guru Drona, Arjun, and Eklavya, has been pursuing archery for two decades, with a particular admiration for Arjun. His journey has recently seen success at the 2022 Asian Games. A graduate of Hansraj College (Delhi University), the 34-year-old has been captivated by the heroes from Ramayana and Mahabharata since his childhood.

Archery as a Way of Life

Recounting his journey into archery, he said, “My curiosity towards Ramayana and Mahabharata inspired me to learn archery when I started in 2002. It has been 20 years since then, and even today, it is Arjun from Mahabharata who inspires me. We all grow up listening to the great stories of such fighters and I wanted to be just like them.”

Aim for Excellence

Reflecting on his victory at the 2022 Asian Games, he likened his experience to “aiming for the machli ki aankh,” a reference to a small eye of a fish, which has been his goal since the 2014 Games. As he looks to the future, he is determined to continue honing his skills and achieving even greater precision in hitting the target’s center.

A Life Beyond Archery

Despite his significant victory, this archer, who currently serves as an Assistant Commissioner in the Income Tax Department, Delhi, remains grounded. He views the celebration of his success as a brief interlude, with his focus already shifting to upcoming events. The Asian Championship and the European Cup are just a month away, and he’s gearing up for the National Games as well. He emphasizes that regardless of whether it’s a national or international championship, his preparation and dedication remain the same, driven by his desire to make the country proud.

An Inspirational Journey

The archer’s inspiring journey, fueled by ancient Indian epics and mythological tales, highlights the enduring appeal of these stories in contemporary life. As he pursues excellence in archery, his story serves as a testament to the enduring influence of mythological heroes and the pursuit of one’s dreams, embodying the spirit of Arjun as he aims for the bullseye, both in sports and in life.
